Magellan RoadMate for iPhone

For those who like to keep all their technology at one place: The Magellan RoadMate Application for the iPhone offers the same functions as a standalone GPS unit. The app offers iPhone address book integration, spoken street name guidance, highway lane assist, a pedestrian mode, and best of all, in-app music control. The app also works on 2nd generation iPod touch. Like the standalone device, the Magellan RoadMate for iPhone features the OneTouch user menu, which allows users to store addresses, POI’s and searches. Due to the fact that the RoadMate for iPhone stores maps and POI’s locally, its loading time is incredibly fast.

This specific Application also allows users to specify extended city areas instead of just naming cities, which makes finding addresses in some locations easier. Predictive text and auto-completion are two features which make the RoadMate an efficient option for searches while driving. Another nifty feature of Magellan’s iPhone app is the built-in music control, which allows users to control and create playlists without exiting the app.

The Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone, sold separately, complements the RoadMate and enables the iPhone to be mounted on your dashboard. It works with most navigation or location based amps. The cradle features powerful speakers, Bluetooth hands-free speaking kit and fits most hard shell cases. Additionally, the cradle has a built-in GPS chip which allows for more accuracy, perhaps making it worth spending the additional $129 for the cradle unit.

The RoadMate for iPhone currently only offers services for North America ($79.99) and USA ($49.99), and as of yet, no European release date has been announced for the Premium Car Kit, though Magellan has announced that they are working on a European version of its iPhone app.
